Speigeltent brings ol Bohemian Paris, music (and dancing till dawn) to Manhattan

Every summer there’s a traveling burlesque circus that comes to Manhattan. No joke. It’s the best idea to rejuvenate the downtown area spirits since those “I HEART NY” shirts (which are so 1982). Down by the South Street Seaport - two circus tents, a line of bars, and dance floor are laid out on the planks. The theme is Moulin Rouge; think smoky rooms, red velour, waitresses in bustiers and black lace stockings. Every night, from August to November, there’s a quirky assemblage of entertainment, from live bands to musical theatre, international DJs, and burlesque shows.

Leopard Lady has had the good fortune to have seen Yeasayer (New York City) in her own fair city of Brisbane at the trusty Zoo. They blew LL’s mind and on a bit of research into these talented folk, she found wonderful YouTube treasure. Hopefully you all get your minds blown at a live Yeasayer show at some point in the future!

Paper Trail: T.I.

American rapper T.I. will be releasing his album on September 30, 2008. The album’s title, Paper Trail, comes from T.I.’s decision to write down all of his lyrics on paper. About 50 tracks have been recorded during production, including a collaboration with Fall Out Boy on a track called ‘Out in the Cold’.

Santogold, an American songwriter, producer and singer, cannot be easily categorised. I really enjoy her music and her style can’t be put into words. She straddles indie rock, dub, new wave, punk rock, psychedelic rock, art rock, electronic, synthpop… But she has been compared to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and M.I.A. and has said that she is inspired by 1980s pop music also citing Blondie, Grace Jones and James Brown as influences.

Kings of Leon: Only by the Night

Those Tennessee boys have only gone and done it again, releasing another album that has whipped the UK into a frenzy and stormed chart domination with both the album and the STD ridden single, “Sex on Fire” (ok I might have misunderstood the meaning behind that one). So is the hype deserved?
Looking altogether less hairy […]

Killahbeez interview with Boys Noize

On several occasions at Killahbeez, we made mention to German electronica DJ, Alex Ridha aka Boys Noize.  I first came across Boys Noize’s music by way of Kitsune Maison’s only podcast.  The track was a remix to Feist’s “My Moon, My Man” on Kitsune Maison’s 4th CD compilation.  With a very distinct sound and Johnny […]

Those bonny Sugababes girls are all set for South Africa in December to play the first ever Virgin Festivals there in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Oasis @ Toronto Virgin Festival

And Oasis. Though the band have certainly had their share of notorious gigs (or pre-gigs or post-gigs) over the years, this is definitely one that will live in infamy. It should have been memorable, but for different reasons. Early tastes of their new record “Dig Out Your Soul” had people saying it was their best […]

Liam Fray from The Courteeners says they’ll headline the UK V Festival next year, probably. Okay - so, while backstage at this year’s Chelmsford V Festival, I kind of pushed him in to making that statement and I immediately felt soiled and dirty like some gutter-dwelling tabloid hack but hey, all’s fair in love, rock’n'roll and trying to get that exclusive backstage scoop.

Having started the uber cool label, Mowax, at the tender age of 18, UNKLE’s James Lavelle knows a thing or two about good music. The coupling of the UK’s finest (and newest) live venue ‘matter’ and a live appearance by UNKLE proved too much of a temptation for music.virgin.com so we went down for matter’s launch night to have a gander. Watch Eleanor Conway’s video interview where she gets down and dirty with the man from Unkle.

Paul Weller, Stereophonics @ Toronto Virgin Festival

On the day’s schedule set up in the media tent, the final three performers on the main stage at the Toronto Virgin Festival were cheekily circled with the extra note declaring that “The British Invasion” began there. And correct it was – while a healthy amount of performers from the UK had already performed that weekend, the veteran acts closing things out – Stereophonics, Paul Weller and Oasis – were like a dream trifecta for many of the Anglophiles who had come out for the fest.

With Jack White and Alicia Key’s collaboration getting everyone in the mood for some ultimate spy action I thought it was a good opportunity to have a look at the recent actions of our Bond fans… So, this year the unlikely collaboration of rocker Jack White and pop sensation Alicia Keys has made writing the Bond theme a highly coveted position. It also has provided quite a bone of contention to some disgruntled musical stars. From the very announcement of this unlikely pairing, a collective “who?” was audible from the mouths of music fans, pop stars and industry people alike. It is a bizarre pairing but vocally they work well together and Jack White has once again written a brilliant song.
